What’s in Keno’s player today: Monsters Of Folk
Seems like a good year for eclectic super groups. All we need is a new Golden Smog album to complete the trifecta.
I was turned on to this group by the guys in Traffico. The band consists of Jim James from My Morning Jacket, Conor Oberst and Mike Mogis from Bright Eyes and M. Ward. In the touring lineup is also Denton local Will Johnson from Centro-Matic on drums.
As a musician and an audiophile, this is a truly incredible album. Sonically the project is beautiful. Songs range from having lush harmonies and instrumentation to fairly jangly and aggressive sounds, to very clean classic folk acoustic. You can tell that this was a group of very talented songwriters offering their own compositions to the whole. Each writers own musical style is apparent and recognizable. Many of the tracks remind me of some great music, with style call backs to Harrison, Dylan and some of the great early folk and rock pioneers, but also updated styles and sensibilities.
The idea for the band was formed in 2004 but due to the members main projects the album was just finished this year. The time spent on recording shows though... it is beautifully executed and recorded. The four primary members played all parts and instruments.
Here's a little Sound Cloud sample from the album.
You can buy the CD now at Amazon, iTunes or right here.
Windows 7 upgrade from XP??
Sorry, there is no easy and Microsoft supported way to upgrade your trusty XP machines to Win7 without essentially performing a full install. During the install if you don't format your drives, the installer will rename your old Windows folder to Windows.Old but you will only retain your Windows settings which will have to be manually imported into Win7. All the programs you had previously will need to be reinstalled, ugg.
Another option is to use Microsoft's Easy Transfer Wizard as described by Microsoft here. But once again this only grabs your Windows settings and not your Programs.
How bout first upgrading XP to Vista then Upgrading to Win7? Oh ya, that'll work if you have access to a Vista install disc and you damn well better make sure it matches your version of 7 with plenty of free time to spare.
I have come across an application from Laplink that is supposed to make the process simpler but I do not know of anyone who has used it. For 20 bones it might be something worth looking into.
Best of luck to all that performs this feat and please for all that is holy, do a full backup of your machine before you do
Woman Slashes Husband’s Throat Because He’s Not Devout Muslim
A Staten Island woman was charged with attempted murder, assault and criminal possession of a deadly weapon after slashing her husband's throat with a knife. The police say the devout Muslim woman was upset her husband did not follow Islam strictly, allegedly making her drink alcohol, dress in short skits, and eat pork.
According to the Daily News, Sheikh Naseem, a teacher at Susan Wagner High School, woke up on Wednesday to find wife Rabia Sarwar on his chest yelling, "It's time for you to die!" and slashing his throat. Naseem told the Post, "She just screamed, ‘They are going to be orphans now!’"—referring to his children from previous marriages—"She kept on coming after me with the knife and I grabbed it and broke it into two pieces and ran out of the room." He had to call the police from a neighbor's home, because she had hidden the phones. Naseem was treated for surface wounds.
Sarwar allegedly confessed to the police, listing her husband's various abuses and how Salman Rushdie was his favorite author. Her lawyer said she was "emotionally abused..He got her to drink alcohol, eat pork and change her clothes. She wanted to dress traditionally. I think he was a cruel person who preyed on her."
Naseem, "who was born in Pakistan, but is half Norwegian and is a Unitarian," explained that he wed Sarwar, who is from Pakistan, through an arranged marriage five months ago. (Given his two previous failed marriages, an ex-wife said, "Being that he didn't do very well the first two times, he thought he would try a woman of his own culture.") Naseem said he thought she was adjusting to American culture just fine, "There was no gun pointed to her head to do these things."
/really? whats wrong with a night of alcohol, short skirts, and a little pork?!

Sierra Nevada and Dogfish Head to release ‘Life & Limb’ Collaboration
Chico, CA - This fall independent craft brewers Sierra Nevada and Dogfish Head, will release two collaborative beers. Limb & Life-a draft-only beer-will debut in October; with Life & Limb 24oz bottles and limited draft to follow in November.
The beers-Life & Limb, and Limb & Life-are dedicated to the family of beer drinkers and enthusiasts worldwide who continue to support the little guys, iconoclasts, entrepreneurs, and pioneers who risk life and limb to shape the vibrant craft-brewing community. Over the years, the two brewers-Ken Grossman and Sam Calagione-have become friends in the industry. They quickly realized how many similarities they share. Grossman's history as a craft-brewing pioneer and his radical approach to brewing are echoed some fifteen years later by Calagione-through his boundary-pushing innovation and tireless promotion for the cause of craft beer.
Both men started out as home brewers obsessed with beer-making. Both share deep values of sustainability and responsibility. Both share the desire to pass their breweries on to the next generation, and both started out small-from humble beginnings-and built vibrant, creative, beer-centered and fiercely independent breweries, despite the long odds.
Their mutual respect, admiration, and none-too-few shared glasses of beer led to the collaborative idea.
Good luck finding some of that. Two of the greatest Craft Breweries, create surely two of the greatest craft brews!
